Description
[Manuscript]. [DURU (Louis-Maximilien)]. The Song of Songs. A sacred nuptial ode. 19th century. Small 8vo, olive-coloured Russian half-leather in Bradel style, titled on the spine ‘Sacred Poems 2 / Song of Songs’ (spine faded, headband and corners worn) Autograph manuscript, most likely unpublished. Latin text of the Song of Songs, with Abbé Duru’s translation into French verse opposite. [43] folios written on both sides, followed by blank folios, which were presumably intended to contain ‘explanatory notes’ that do not appear here. Abbé Motheré, in his work *Vie de Louis-Maximilien Duru* (Monterault-Fault-Yonne, Zanote, 1871), mentions this manuscript on p. 272. Also included, by the same author: *The Song of Songs by St Luguori*. 10 September 1834. In-8, [18] leaves, stapled, without cover (slight water damage). Italian text of the *Dialogue between Jesus and the Loving Soul*, with the French version provided opposite by Abbé Duru ‘at the request of Cardinal Villecourt, then Vicar-General at Sens, but after I had pointed out to him that I did not know the Italian language’. Comprising 2 volumes. Provenance: Joseph Bierry (1851–1939), priest of the Diocese of Sens (ex-libris stamp). ALSO INCLUDED: [Manuscript]. DURU (Louis-Maximilien). Epistles. [Circa 1845]. Folio, approx. 210 written pages (17 quires of 6 ff. and one of 4 ff.), contemporary fawn half-calf, smooth spine, black title label, gilt roulette (verso decoration at the tail of the spine). A very neat copy, in ink on paper, of these poems composed by Abbé Duru between 1829 and 1841. A few rare autograph corrections by the author, and a note signed in his own hand: ‘Most of these Epistles leave much to be desired: they are nonetheless, for me, fond and cherished memories of the past’. It appears to be the volume cited by Abbé Motheré in his work *Vie de Louis-Maximilien Duru* (Monterault-Fault-Yonne, Zanote, 1871), p. 273. Attached are four handwritten items: 1. Table of epistles. – 2. Poem signed ‘to Elisa’. – 3. Epistle to my nephew Paul… Auxerre, 1866. - 4. *Le politique poème*, 1861. Provenance: Louis-Maximilien Duru (1804–1869), priest of the Diocese of Sens, historian and poet (author’s copy); Joseph Bierry (1851–1939), priest of the Diocese of Sens (ex-libris stamp).
