BARANTE (Prosper Brugière de). History of the Dukes of Burgundy of the House of Valois, 1364–1477. Paris, Dufey, 1837–1838.
12 volumes in-8, contemporary navy blue calfskin, spine with 4 decorated raised bands, author’s name, title and volume number in gold, with gold roulettes, fleurons and fillets, marbled edges (rare foxing).
A fine copy of the first illustrated edition, which is sometimes found in 13 volumes. Here the engravings have been inserted into the text, except for 6 plates of ornamentation preceded by the title page of the Atlas, bound in volume 12.
The illustrations comprise 126 plates: 105 plates of views and portraits, 15 maps and plans, and 6 plates of ornamentation not mentioned by Vicaire.
On a few maps, the rivers have recently been coloured blue.
