Description
[Autographs]. [Burgundy]. A collection compiled by Loÿs (or Louis) Barrault, an editor and later head of division at the Yonne Prefecture in the 1930s and 1940s.
A substantial folio-sized album, in brown half-shagreen with corner pieces, gilt title on the spine, and embossed scrolls on the spine and covers. It contains around 300 items of various kinds and from different periods, including 280 mounted items and around twenty loose items; some are connected to Burgundy and signed by local figures.
The album opens with the original drawing of the collector’s bookplate. Of particular note are a letter in the collector’s own hand (L.A.S.) by Reynaldo Hahn, two typewritten letters signed by the American presidents Roosevelt and Hoover, and historical documents, some on parchment, including diplomas—such as a 1814 appointment as a Knight of the Order of Saint Louis on vellum—an autograph poem by Catulle-Mendès, signed photographs of actors from the 1930s, 4 aerial photographs of mountain peaks, signed and dated 1930. A very varied collection that merits close examination.
