MONTBARD Moulded “Montbard marble” tray, Louis XV period With a scalloped front, moulded with a corbin’s beak Restored L. 130 W. 56 cm From Buffon’s birthplace (Montbard). It was in 1730 that Jean Nadault discovered a quarry yielding a new type of marble at ‘La Louère’, near Montbard. He shared his discovery with Buffon in 1741. Samples were sent early on to Versailles and Chantilly, but it is far more commonly found in public buildings and churches in Dijon, Sens, Auxerre, Semur, Avallon and Châtillon; its use in furniture is extremely rare.
