Description
BUSSY RABUTIN (Roger de). *Histoire amoureuse des Gaules* by the Count of Bussy-Rabutin. Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1740. 4 volumes in-18, calf-bound, spine with raised bands and floral panels, title labels, red edges (shows signs of wear). Roger de Rabutin, Count of Bussy (1618–1693), was a general under Louis XIV and a philosopher who wrote extensively in letters. Due to outrageous remarks regarding the customs of the court and the royal family, he was exiled to his estate in Burgundy, where, to amuse his mistress, he wrote his *Histoire amoureuse des Gaules*, a veritable pamphlet in which he ridicules the French aristocracy. The work caused a scandal, and the king was informed. The count was then stripped of all his offices and imprisoned in the Bastille, before being sent back to the Château de Bussy-Rabutin, where he would spend the rest of his days.
