STUNNING BYZANTINE GOLD AND AMETHYST CROSS PENDANT.
Ca. AD 600.
A gold and amethyst cross pendant with four faceted amethyst arms meeting at a central gold box with stepped walls bordered by beaded wire. At each corner sits a granulated cluster, and a high-domed circular amethyst cabochon is secured in a raised collet with a beaded rim. Cylindrical gold caps close each arm and are ornamented with applied granulation and beaded wire arranged in circlets. A ribbed suspension loop rises above.
