BYZANTINE GOLD AND NIELLO RING WITH INSCRIPTION 'VIVAS IN DEO' AND CHI-RHO. Ca. AD 400 - 600. A gold ring with a small circular bezel bearing a Chi-Rho monogram, the solid hoop broadening to short faceted shoulders inscribed ‘VIVAS IN DEO’ (‘May you live in God’). The monogram and inscription are inlaid with black niello. Size: D:19.15mm / US: 9 1/4 / UK: S; Weight: 14.25g Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Switzerland; formerly with Dr. Hartmann, Geneva, late 1980s to early 2000s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
