MEROVINGIAN SILVER-GILT BISHOP'S NECKLACE WITH CROSS PENDANT.
Ca. AD 400 - 600. A silver-gilt necklace comprising a woven chain terminating in cylindrical collars and joined to two large discoid elements, each with a central garnet cabochon and punched decorative border. Suspended below is a cross-shaped pendant with concave sides and broad, rounded terminals, similarly decorated with a central garnet and raised circular motifs surrounded by punched ornamentation. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number 2007,8001.1 (cross shape). Size: 400/800mm x 50mm; Weight: 85g Provenance: Private London collection, acquired on the German art market, 1990s. This piece is accompanied by a historical report from Alessandro Neri, an international Cultural Heritage expert based in Florence, Italy.
