PAIR OF BYZANTINE OPENWORK HIGH KARAT GOLD EARRINGS WITH AMETHYSTS. Ca. AD 500 - 600. A matched pair of gold earrings composed of circular hoops supporting crescent-shaped panels adorned with granulated and twisted wire decoration. Each is fitted with five teardrop-shaped amethyst beads, individually mounted on fine gold wires and suspended from looped elements along the lower edge of the crescent. Size: 62-62mm x 42-42mm; Weight: 21g Provenance: Private UK collection; formerly in a 1980s-1990s London collection. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
