MEDIEVAL GOLD AND NIELLO RING WITH GRIFFIN. Ca. AD 1200 - 1400. A gold ring with a broad hoop expanding to a circular bezel bearing a roundel engraved with a right-facing striding griffin, encircled by a saw-tooth niello border within a broader flat rim. The hoop is decorated with a horizontal niello band of small crosses. Size: D:18.14mm / US: 8 / UK: P 1/2; Weight: 21g Provenance: Private London collection; previously acquired from a New York private collection formed in the 1980s.
