Description
MEROVINGIAN IRON LONGSWORD WITH CLOISONNÉ.
Ca. AD 400 - 600. An iron sword with a long, straight, double-edged blade of lenticular section with parallel sides running to a very gradual point, the shoulders stepping to a short rectangular tang. Set against the base of the blade is a wide guard inlaid in cloisonné with deep red garnets arranged in small geometric cells. For similar blade see: J. Jirik, K Blazkova, J. Bezakova, B. Ager Royal Insignia of Late Antiquity from M_ec and _evni_ov, Fig. 21: Burial equipment from the “princely” tomb of Pouan (Aube) discovered in 1842. Late 5th century Size: 980mm x 110mm; Weight: 600g Provenance: Private UK collection; acquired in Belgium; formerly with J. Micas collection, Paris, France formed since the 1970s.
