Description

EGYPTIAN FAIENCE TAWERET AMULET. Late Period, Ca. 664 - 332 BC. A turquoise-blue faience amulet of Taweret standing upright on a small rectangular base. She has the head of a hippopotamus and a human-shaped body with a pregnant belly and pendulous breasts, the arms held along the sides and the legs terminating in leonine paws. A ridged crocodile tail runs down the back. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object Number: 74.51.4486. Size: 34mm x 11mm; Weight: 3g Provenance: Property of a London gallery; previously in a collection of a North London gentleman; formerly in a collection of Mrs B.
