Description
STUNNING APULIAN AMPHORA WITH FUNERARY SCENE AND LADY OF FASHION.
Ca. 350 BC. A red-figure amphora with a broad, flaring mouth, a cylindrical neck, upright strap handles from neck to shoulder, and an elongated egg-shaped body rising on a stepped pedestal foot with moulded rings. A tongue frieze encircles the shoulder. The principal panel shows a nude youth with one foot set on a rock facing a draped woman; both stand on a groundline above a running wave, the scene framed by tall tendrils and scrolling palmettes. The reverse depicts two himation-clad youths engaged in conversation. The neck bears, on one side, a large female head in profile, the so-called "Lady of Fashion", with beaded sakkos, necklace and earring set among tendrils, and, on the other, a large palmette.
