HELLENISTIC JASPER INTAGLIO DEPICTING HERAKLES AND THE NEMEAN LION IN GOLD RING.
Ca. 200 - 100 BC .
A jasper intaglio engraved with Herakles wrestling the Nemean lion, the nude hero shown in profile, gripping the beast by the forequarters, a knotted club standing to the right. Set in a circular gold collet with a narrow raised rim, the broad shoulders flare from the setting and pass into a flat-band hoop of sub-rectangular section that tapers towards the back. The ring of a possibly later period.
