Lot no. 700
Description
RARE ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE KYLIX (EYE-CUP) WITH DIONYSIAC SCENE.
Ca. 530 - 500 BC.
A terracotta black-figure kylix (eye-cup) with a broad shallow bowl on a slender stem and discoid foot, the horizontal handles set low on the wall. The interior presents a circular tondo with a gorgoneion, and the underside shows concentric rings around a ray zone at the stem. The exterior is decorated with large apotropaic eyes placed to either side of each handle root. Between the handles run two identical figural friezes: at left stands Dionysos with a drinking horn and an ivy wreath among curling vine tendrils, while to his right a youth drives a biga shown in profile.
