Description

RARE ARCHAIC GREEK DECORATED KOTHON. Ca. 600 - 500 BC. A pottery kothon with a wide rim enclosing a recessed bowl set on a low flaring ring foot. A loop handle rises from the shoulder, flanked by small lugs. The surface is coated with a smooth, burnished cream slip. Decoration consists of groups of short vertical strokes in dark brown spaced around the outer and inner faces of the rim. Concentric painted bands encircle the underside of the base. Size: 60mm x 200mm; Weight: 355g Private London collection; previously acquired on the English art market; originally in the collection of W Jenikin, London 1980’s.
