ROMAN PINK CHALCEDONY INTAGLIO DEPICTING A MAGICAL SCENE IN GOLD RING. Ca. AD 1 - 300. A pink chalcedony intaglio showing a procession of birds striding left on a ground line, above them a row of three insects. The gem is secured in an oval gold collet, flanked on each side by small applied pellet clusters. The broad shoulders rise from the setting and form a wide, flat band hoop that tapers towards the back. The ring of a possibly later period. Size: D:18.34mm / US: 8 1/4 / UK: Q; Weight: 6.4g Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in France in the early 2000s; formerly in a Swiss private collection formed in the 1980s and 1990s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
