ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO DEPICTING THE LEGIONARY EAGLE AND SNAKE IN GOLD RING. Ca. AD 50 - 150. A carnelian intaglio engraved with a legionary eagle standing right, head lowered and wings partly spread, confronting a rearing serpent entwined about a stem. A gold ring mounts the gem in a high oval collet, the broad shoulders worked with vertical flutes. The ring of a possibly later period. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number 2010,5006.1050. Size: D:17.73mm / US: 7 1/2 / UK: O 1/2; Weight: 20g Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Belgium; formerly in a German private collection before 2000.
