ROMAN CHALCEDONY INTAGLIO DEPICTING VENUS IN PROFILE IN GOLD RING.
Ca. AD 1 - 200.
A chalcedony intaglio engraved with the head of Venus in left profile, the hair falling in loose locks behind the neck, the eye, nose and lips defined by crisp linear incisions, with short parallel grooves indicating the drapery. It is set in a plain oval gold bezel with a slight upstanding rim, the bezel broadening into rounded shoulders and a tapered hoop of D-shaped section, forming a gold ring, possibly of a later date.
