*BAS-RELIEF OF THE GOD HAPI Limestone H. 20 x W. 27 x D. 6 cm Egypt, New Kingdom, c. 1550–1069 BC Provenance From the collection of Charles Ede, London, prior to 1975 Rassla Foundation Collection, Zurich, acquired from Charles Ede in 1975 The scene depicts the god Hapi in right-facing profile, recognisable by his distinctive iconography: a male body with pendulous female breasts, symbolising his nurturing nature and the abundance brought by the flooding of the Nile. The face displays the idealised features of the New Kingdom: almond-shaped eyes emphasised by an incised line of kohl, a straight nose and full lips. He wears a tripartite wig and holds a table of offerings. The bare torso combines a muscular male chest with sagging female breasts rendered in rounded relief. This androgyny is Hapy’s defining attribute, signifying the god as a source of fertility and abundance for Egypt. A New Kingdom limestone relief depicting the god Hapy. c. 1550–1069 BCE.
