Stuccoed and painted wood
H. 20 cm
Egypt, Late Period (c. 664–332 BC)
Provenance
Former collection of Jean Ferrero, Nice, assembled in the 1960s–1970s
Via the Ferrero Gallery
Private collection in the South of France, acquired from the previous owner
A sarcophagus mask carved from wood, covered with a stucco coating and painted. The face is rendered in red ochre, whilst the eyes and eyebrows are outlined in thick black. A vertical crack runs down the centre of the forehead and across the mouth, indicating shrinkage of the underlying wood. The chin is intact, and the lips are faintly outlined. The elongated shape of the face and the simplicity of the eye design suggest a late period of production, possibly Saite or Ptolemaic.
