Description
FUNERARY MASK
Stuccoed wood, polychrome (red ochre, carbon black, Egyptian blue or green, white)
H. 17 cm
Egypt, Late Period, 664–332 BC
Provenance
Former collection of Jean Ferraro, Nice, assembled in the 1960s–1970s
Via the Ferrero Gallery
Private collection in the South of France, acquired from the previous owner
Life-size sarcophagus mask, carved from wood, covered with a stucco preparation and painted. The face, rendered in an intense red ochre (the conventional colour for male figures), features large,
almond-shaped eyes with black lines extending the eye line. The three-part wig is rendered in blue-green
with a pale yellow headband across the forehead. The nose shows signs of an ancient loss revealing the underlying wood; there are a few
areas where the polychromy is missing on the cheeks. In good overall condition despite these losses, with soft modelling and a serene expression.
