The head is shown in full face, with an intense expression. The eyes, deeply set, have pierced pupils; the eyebrows are furrowed and the forehead is creased. The mouth is open, the lips parted. The face is framed by a thick head of hair in wavy, curled locks, standing upright above the forehead. The nose is worn. The back is roughly finished (or broken). The figure, with its open mouth and abundant hair, is reminiscent of a theatrical mask or a decorative mask (mascaron).
