Description
FRAGMENT OF A FUNERARY RELIEF
Marble, with a light ochre patina
H. 23 cm
Roman art, 1st–2nd centuries AD
A fragment probably from a figurative sarcophagus or an architectural high relief: the head of a young man, his face turned in three-quarter profile to the right, framed by a profusion of curly hair carved
with a trephine (deep perforations creating a chiaroscuro effect). The features are idealised — smooth forehead, well-defined brow ridge, full cheek — evoking an ephebe-like type (Eros, the young Dionysus, or a figure from a
Dionysian procession). The block shows a distinct break around the edge, indicating that it was detached from a larger whole. The surface is in fine condition.
