Carnelian Intaglio 1.6 x 1.2 cm – Setting 2.1 x 1.7 cm Intaglio: Late Hellenistic – early Roman period: 1st century BC – 1st century AD Gold setting, mid-20th century Weight 11.22 g; TDD 61 – US 9½ – UK S½ (adjustable) The carnelian, a deep orange-red colour, is engraved with the bust of Apollo the Archer, depicted from the waist up, in profile facing left. The god, bare-chested and with a youthful profile, wears a laurel wreath — his attribute — with his wavy hair tied at the nape of his neck; the divine archer’s bow and arrow are visible behind his shoulder. The intaglio is set in an oval bezel within a mid-20th-century gold setting.
