Description
SEATED CACIQUE
Beige stone with a patina of age
Dimensions: 11.3 x 7.6 x 7.2 cm
Muisca culture, Colombia, 600–1600 AD
Provenance
From a former Parisian estate acquired by the family over 40 years ago from
Mr Robert Vergnes, rue des Saints-Pères, Paris.
A sculpture depicting a seated chieftain, with a solemn air. As is often the case, the head is adorned with a headdress; the seated position and hands resting on the chest symbolise power. The piece has beautiful overall proportions and the perfect symmetry of the face’s geometric features, which is equally characteristic of the Muisca culture. The Muisca would place gold ex-voto figurines (known as tunjos), mainly depicting human figures, in sacred places, often near natural sites of great beauty. Although renowned as goldsmiths, they also produced some fine stone carvings and ceramics depicting hieratic figures with coffee-bean-shaped eyes, wearing headdresses and various ornaments.
