Description
HERVé WAHLEN (born 1957) Bronze case, 2000 Gold tiara; patinated bronze case Total height 44 cm; tiara diameter 15 cm; tiara weight 54 g Provenance For the diadem: Private collection of Mrs P.C., prior to 2000 Certificate of authenticity by Michel Cohen, dated 26 October 2000 A bronze sculpture-object designed by Hervé Wahlen as a case for an antique gold tiara. The bronze, ovoid in shape and hand-hammered, with a dark patina, opens in two via a hinge; the gilded and burnished interior reveals, set at the heart of the work, a gold tiara formed of a band embossed with radiant solar faces. The work is in keeping with Wahlen’s approach; as a bronze smith, he has been reviving traditional metal-shaping techniques since the 1980s, here employed to foster a dialogue between the brilliance of pre-Columbian gold and the depth of patinated bronze. Born in 1957, Hervé Wahlen is a sculptor and copper smith who has been practising since 1983. Working with copper and bronze by hand using traditional copper-smithing techniques — which he describes as lying between boilermaking and goldsmithing — he creates hollow sculptures that remain balanced through a system of counterweights. Gold, used on the inside or on the sides of his pieces, accentuates their upward movement and sense of mystery. As the heir to the tools of the great copper smith René-Gabriel Lacroix, he has trained many artists in this technique. His work creates a dialogue between the lustre of the precious metal and the depth of the patinas.
