Description
MUSICIAN FAUN AND SATYR CHILD WITH CYMBALS Bronze with a brown patina, on a blackened wooden plinth H: 56 cm Based on an ancient model, early 19th century The faun, young and athletic, is depicted standing, his body swaying gracefully, his head thrown back and his hair tossed as if by the momentum of dance. An animal skin (nebride) tied around his hip is his only garment. He holds a flute in his left hand, whilst with his raised right arm he lifts a young satyr clanging a pair of cymbals together. The composition draws on the Bacchic repertoire: the music of the aulos and cymbals evokes the Dionysian thiasos, the procession of Bacchus in which satyrs and fauns lead the dance. The motif of the adult satyr carrying a child draws on the ancient types of the musician satyr, which were widely copied during the Neoclassical period. The work reflects the taste, which remained popular throughout the nineteenth century, for bronze sculptures modelled on antiquity, produced by the major European foundries and sought after both for private collections and for decorative purposes. The nuanced brown patina and the lively modelling are characteristic of this style. After the Antique. A 19th-century bronze group. A faun and a satyr playing music. The faun, youthful and athletic, is shown standing, his body in a supple contrapposto, his head thrown back and his hair lifted as if by the impulse of the dance. A draped animal skin (nebris) tied at the hip is his only garment. He holds a flute in his left hand, whilst with his raised right arm he supports a young satyr clanging a pair of cymbals. The composition belongs to the Bacchic repertoire: the music of the aulos and cymbals evokes the Dionysiac thiasos, the retinue of Bacchus in which satyrs and fauns lead the dance. The motif of an adult satyr carrying a child draws on the ancient types of the musician satyr, widely copied during the Neoclassical era. The work reflects the taste — prevalent throughout the 19th century — for bronzes modelled on antiquity, produced by the great European foundries and sought after for both collectors’ cabinets and interiors. The nuanced brown patina and the lively modelling are characteristic of this production.
