YOUNG BEAST TAMER AND HIS BEAST White Carrara marble H 152 cm x W 64 cm x D 85 cm 19th-century Italian work A group sculpture in white Carrara marble depicting a naked young man with a full head of curly hair falling in long ringlets over his shoulders and gathered in a tuft at the crown of his head, a drapery tied around his hips and falling down his side. Standing with his arms lowered and slightly apart, his hands open, he straddles a large wild beast lying at his feet, one leg resting on the animal he has subdued. The whole stands on a naturalistic rocky plinth, left partially unfinished. The reverse side has been treated with the same care as the front, with the drapery extending along the back. The work plays on the contrast, characteristic of 19th-century Italian sculpture, between the polished finish of the flesh and the finely detailed rendering of the hair, drapery and fur.
