Description
TANTARDINI Antonio (Milan, 1829–1879) "THE MODEL" White Carrara marble Height: 170 cm Signed and dated ‘A. TANTARDINI F. Milano 1866’. 19th-century Italian work. This work perfectly embodies the virtuoso sculptural technique of Antonio Tantardini, who, in a country renowned for its talented marble sculptors, was counted amongst the greatest masters of this art. Vicario describes his talent as “una abilità tecnica stupefacente”. Trained at the Accademia di Brera in Milan in the studio of Pompeo Marchesi — where he later became a teacher himself — Antonio Tantardini developed a body of work that oscillated between realism and romanticism, and was particularly renowned for his female nudes. Some sources suggest he trained in Florence under Lorenzo Bartolini, though this information is difficult to verify. Among his most notable works are ‘La schiava’ (which attracted attention at the 1867 Paris World’s Fair) and ‘La leggitrice’. He is notably responsible for the allegorical figure of ‘La Storia’ (1865), at the foot of Odoardo Tabacchi’s monument to Cavour in Milan, an ‘Arnaldo da Brescia’ (marble, 1866; plaster model at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan) and the ‘Genio dell’Indipendenza’ (1871) for the monument to the fallen of 1848 in Vicenza.
