Description
STUDIO TOTEM (20th century)
Suite of 6 knives, carved horn and rosewood handles finished with a Plexiglas bubble
Made by the Thiers cutlery factory (FR), unique set, signed MC Thiers
1985
Provenance: Private collection of Mr Jean-Pierre Hochet
Studio Totem was created in 1980 in Lyon by Jacques Bonnot, Frédérick du Chayla, Vincent Lemarchand and Claire Olivès.
In 1985, the town of Thiers organised a symposium on monumental metal sculpture, inviting a number of artists, including Dennis Oppenheim and Patrick Raynaud, to create works that would later be installed in Thiers' urban spaces. As part of this event, several designers collaborated with the Musée de la Coutellerie - or more precisely with "La Maison des Coutelliers", an association linked to the museum at the time. The "MC" hallmark corresponds to this structure.
