Description
Jacques LE MOYNE de MORGUES (Dieppe 1533 – London 1588), attributed to
Jacinthe du Pérou. Gouache watercolour over black pencil lines. 22 x 13 cm (irregular shape). The drawing is double-layered, slightly sun-faded, with small stains.
Bears an annotation, in another hand in pen and brown ink, in the bottom right-hand corner: ‘Jasinte perú’. The annotation is similar to that found on a drawing by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues sold at Sotheby’s in New York on 21 January 2004, lot 45. Furthermore, the gouache-watercolour technique is very similar to that used in many of Le Moyne de Morgues’s drawings.
Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues is best known for his portraits of Native Americans, which he produced during his expedition with René de Laudonnière to Florida in 1564, whilst serving as a cartographer and illustrator. He escaped the massacre of the French by the Spanish in September 1565 and, on his return to Europe, faced with the threat of the Wars of Religion, took refuge in London, where he devoted the rest of his career to painting flowers and fruit. Our three studies are fine examples of the technical prowess of this artist, who remains so little recognised.
