Description
17th-century French school, c. 1640–1650, Saint Geneviève, oil on oak panel, 24 x 18 cm On the reverse, the mark ‘MB’ of the Antwerp panel-maker Melchior de Bout (active 1625/26–1658), a supplier of panels to painters working in Paris. The saint, depicted as a shepherdess amongst her sheep, holds a candle which a demon is trying to extinguish and which an angel is relighting. Note: The work will be included in the catalogue by Jørgen Wadum (Professor, Associate Researcher at the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History) on early panel paintings.
