Description
Lucas VAN UDEN (Antwerp 1595–1672 Antwerp) Landscape with horsemen and a stag. Oil on panel. 41 x 63 cm. Signed and dated lower left: Lvcas van Vden / A° 1645. Note: This elegantly composed landscape, enlivened by a hunting scene, demonstrates Lucas van Uden’s mastery of Flemish landscape painting. Together with its now-lost counterpart, it was exhibited in 1965 at the ‘The Age of Rubens’ exhibition at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels. Both paintings are held in the photographic archives of the RKD, The Hague, under image numbers 68348 and 68347. Like his contemporaries Pierre Paul Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder and David Teniers, Uden was a keen and perceptive observer of nature. Most of his paintings are based on sketches made by van Uden during excursions in the Antwerp region. His style is strongly influenced by the innovative landscapes of Rubens, in whose studio he worked for a time. Although van Uden often collaborated with other artists, notably David Teniers the Younger and Jan Wildens, the landscape and figures are probably his own work. Provenance: Belgian private collection Exhibition: The Age of Rubens, Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Brussels, 15 October – 12 December 1965, cat. no. 282a and its counterpart cat. no. 282b with illustration.
