M.F. Crandell, USA – GOWANDA. N.Y. Circa 1860, Muzzle-Loading Target Rifles, Kentucky type, a rare and fine black-powder percussion target rifle with percussion caps, featuring a double-barrelled configuration with one hexagonal and one round barrel, superimposed in two different calibres, marked “M.F. CRANDELL”, accompanied by its cleaning rod; jasper lock with double hammers (strikers) chiselled with a stylised floral design, also marked “M.F. CRANDELL”; trigger guard chiselled with a design featuring a hunting dog and foliage; walnut stock engraved with a checkered pattern, overlaid with richly decorated and chiselled silver and nickel silver fittings; the patch box is decorated with the American eagle holding a banner in its beak and marked “M.F CRANDELL MAKER”, thumb plate bearing the initials ‘M.F.’; the rifle is accompanied by its diopter (sight), in very good overall condition (slight wear), mechanism in working order, total length approximately 125 cm. Manufacturer’s notes: M.F. Crandell was a historic American gunsmith and manufacturer based in Gowanda, New York State, renowned for his bespoke muzzle-loading shooting and hunting rifles; each weapon he produced was a unique piece. Reference notes: His work and his firearms are notably featured in several reference works on historic American firearms, such as *Our Rifles* by Charles Winthrop Sawyer and *Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle* by Ned H. Roberts.
