Description
Sri Lanka / Ceylon Important Piha Kahetta knife or ‘Kandyan knife’, from the royal workshop, with embossed and chiselled decoration, in silver and brass. Approx. 38 cm. Provenance: Belgian collection of R. L. Note: The finest piha kaetta knives, including this one, were produced in the ‘four workshops ’ (pattal-hatara), a sort of guild of elite craftsmen working exclusively for the king and his court — or, in some cases, for other patrons, but only with royal authorisation. The term ‘four workshops’ refers to the workshops for jewellery, the crown, the golden sword and the throne. In Sri Lanka, the arts of architecture, painting, ivory carving and jewellery-making were entrusted to hereditary guilds or castes of craftsmen who held a highly respected position in society.
