Description
Folded fan, Parisian workshop, c. 1785–1805 A beautiful sheet of engraved paper, finely hand-embellished, decorated on the front with a romantic scene depicting a circle of dancers in a landscaped park. Elegant gentlemen and ladies, dressed in the fashion of the late reign of Louis XVI, join hands in a ballroom dance evoking aristocratic entertainments and gallant festivities. The composition, the delicacy of the poses and the balance of the figures are reminiscent of the engraved models produced by Parisian workshops in the late 18th century, particularly in the style of Nicolas Lavreince, Jean-Michel Moreau the Younger and Jean-Baptiste Huet, whose scenes of courtly life and rural pastimes were widely adapted by fan painters. The richly decorated collar features medallions and cartouches in shades of blue and white, inspired by Oriental porcelain, Chinese and Japanese export porcelain, and Asian-inspired motifs. These panels contain small lakeside landscapes, pavilions, architectural features and stylised trees against a purple background enhanced with silver, in the style of 18th-century chinoiserie. The reverse is adorned with a ‘ruinist’ landscape depicting a lakeside scene dominated by a building in the form of an ancient ruin, in the neoclassical style inspired by the Grand Tour, the landscapes of Hubert Robert and the architectural engravings of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The sheet is edged all around with woven green silk trimmings, likely original, a refined finishing touch designed to protect the edges whilst emphasising the decoration. The frame is probably made of bone; the brown horn finials are joined by a rivet adorned with a mother-of-pearl disc. Some signs of wear, previous restoration work and slight tears at the folds. Original trimmings preserved. Length of the strands: 20.4 cm, housed in a box with glass panels on both sides.
