Description
Russia, 18th or 19th century Russian icon: Christ Pantocrator Enthroned (Spas na prestole) Tempera and gold on a wooden panel with a kovtcheg (recessed central field), border painted in red. Christ is depicted seated facing the viewer on an architectural throne with small columns and a canopy, his feet resting on an oval cushion. In his left hand he holds an open Gospel, inscribed in Church Slavonic; his right hand, raised before his chest, holds a slender attribute (a reed pen?). A cruciform nimbus bearing the letters ОѠН, the monograms IC XC in red medallions, and a title in cinnabar in the upper arched cartouche. The face has a dark complexion set off by linear white highlights. The background and the throne are adorned with a rich design, punched and engraved into the gilded ground, enhanced with painted roses; a frieze of wolf’s teeth and corner quarters.
