Description
Southern Netherlands, 18th century
Saint Joseph holding the Infant Jesus.
A statuette carved in the round from boxwood (or fruitwood). The saint stands with his head bowed, tenderly pressing the naked Child against his cheek whilst supporting him with both hands; the Child, nestled against him, rests one hand on his chest. Joseph, bearded, with wavy hair falling down the nape of his neck, is dressed in a tunic and a loose-fitting cloak with deep, angular folds, one panel of which cascades down his side.
A cylindrical base of turned and carved wood, of a later period: a smooth shaft encircled by a twisted moulding, a circular plinth with a frieze of water leaves, and a foliage-decorated cornice; the shaft forms a box containing a document described as ‘a piece of cloth that touched the bones of Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort’.
Part of the plinth is missing at the rear of the plinth; wear, including at the top of the head
H 17 cm
