Description
TOURNAI, Imperial and Royal Manufactory, c. 1785 A truncated conical cup and saucer in soft porcelain, with a polychrome trompe-l’œil decoration featuring a woodgrain background on which are depicted grisaille landscape engravings set off by red wax seals. The landscapes bear the signature ‘A. Mayer’. Gilded bands on the rims. Note: This rare decoration can be compared to a set of cups and saucers with a faux-wood background and grisaille landscapes held at the Royal Museum of Mariemont, attributed to painters from the Mayer family who were active at the Tournai manufactory. Comparable examples are also documented on the market, notably a cup and saucer described as Tournai, c. 1785, at Pescheteau-Badin in 2018.
