Description
Louis Marie AUTISSIER (1772–1830) Self-portrait of the artist, oil on panel, with a crack, signed lower right, 13.2 x 10.8 cm Inscriptions: On the reverse, an old handwritten inscription: ‘Autissier / portrait of the artist painted by himself’. An old handwritten label containing biographical details about the artist. Note: Born in Vannes on 8 February 1772, Louis-Marie Autissier was a pupil of Vautrin, a former court painter to Stanislas, King of Poland, who later became a drawing teacher at the Naval College in Vannes. He quickly made a name for himself in Paris, then settled in Brussels in 1796, which remained the centre of his career. From there, he made regular visits to Paris, to Lille to stay with his patron, the art collector Malfait, to Ghent – where the Academy elected him as a member in 1812 – and to Holland, where he was awarded the title of Painter to the King. A highly sought-after miniaturist, he painted portraits of, amongst others, Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland; Napoleon I; the King of Rome; Louis XVIII; William I, King of the Netherlands; the Duke of Wellington; and Admiral Sir Sidney Smith. He died in Brussels on 4 September 1830, as an honorary member of the Royal Society of Fine Arts of that city. Lucien Lemaire, who dedicated the first monograph to him in 1912, counts his self-portraits amongst his most remarkable works. Provenance: Belgian private collection; passed down through the family.
