Description
Emmanuel VILLANIS (1858–1914) The Young Slave, sculpture, bronze, signed, approx. 55 cm Note: A French sculptor of Italian origin, Emmanuel Villanis trained at the Accademia Albertina in Turin under Odoardo Tabacchi before settling in Paris in 1885. A leading figure in fin-de-siècle sculpture, Symbolism and Art Nouveau, he is particularly renowned for his female busts inspired by antiquity, literature and opera, notably Sappho, Judith, Delilah and Aida. His bronzes, produced notably by the Société des Bronzes de Paris and Eugène Blot, are distinguished by the elegance of their profiles, the decorative treatment of the hair and the richness of their patinas.
