Description
Ernest Baptiste LEVEILLE (1841–1913), attributed to Asian-style lidded pot in blown, bubbled glass with polychrome inclusions; handle and lid in chiselled brass with gilded floral decoration. Also attributable to François Eugène ROUSSEAU. Bears a label from L’Escalier de Cristal: ‘Escalier de Cristal – Pannier-Lahoche & Cie – 6 rue Scribe & rue Auber 1 – Paris’, Circa 1875–1885. Height approx. 27 cm Note: Founded in Paris in 1804, L’Escalier de Cristal was one of the most prestigious houses for objets d’art of the 19th century. Taken over notably by Pannier Frères, it played a major role in the development of Japonism in the French decorative arts, drawing on the talents of designers such as Édouard Lièvre, Eugène Rousseau, Gabriel Viardot, Émile Gallé and Louis Majorelle. This vase is part of the luxurious and refined range produced at the height of the Japonism craze.
