Note:
Jean François De Boever (Ghent, 1872–1949), a Belgian painter trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent under Louis Tytgadt. Initially a portraitist of the bourgeoisie and the nobility, from 1909 onwards he developed a symbolist and decadent style, blending female figures, eroticism, and macabre and fantastical visions.
Inspired by literature, music and mythology, between 1914 and 1924 he produced, in particular, a major cycle of 157 gouaches illustrating Baudelaire’s *Les Fleurs du mal*, considered one of the most significant bodies of work in his oeuvre.
