Description
Fernand KHNOPFF (1858–1921)
Portrait of Baron Henri Lambert as a child, 1893
Ink drawing on paper, monogrammed ‘FK’ in the bottom right-hand corner.
28 x 21 cm (image size).
Provenance:
Lambert Collection, Brussels, former inventory label on the reverse, no. 1212, identifying the work as: ‘Khnopff Fernand, Portrait of Baron Henri Lambert (as a child), Drawing, 1893’;
Davignon Collection;
Private collection
Note:
The former Lambert Collection label identifies the young subject as Baron Henri Lambert (1887–1933), son of Baron Léon Lambert and Zoé Lucie Betty de Rothschild. Aged around six in 1893, he belonged to the prominent Lambert-Rothschild family of collectors, whose connections with Fernand Khnopff are well documented.
An early bibliography devoted to the artist mentions, in particular, a *Portrait of M. H. Lambert de Rothschild* dating from as early as 1892. Khnopff also painted a portrait of Renée Lambert in 1907.
