Description
Willy SLUITER (1873–1949) Aaltje, 1904. Pastel on paper, signed and dated ‘04’ in the top right-hand corner. 26 × 26 cm (image size). Provenance: Kunsthandel Wed. Oldenzeel, Rotterdam, 19 November 1908, original label on the reverse. Inscriptions and labels on the reverse: Illustrated label from Kunsthandel Wed. Oldenzeel, 20 Gedempte Glashaven, Rotterdam, bearing the handwritten notes ‘Aaltje’, ‘door Willy Sluiter’ and ‘19 November 1908’, as well as a former inventory number. Label from Bosman & Co., Spiegel- en Lijstenfabriek, Voorstraat 358, Dordrecht. Various old inscriptions in pencil. Note: Based in Katwijk from 1901 to 1910, Willy Sluiter devoted a significant part of his work to the inhabitants and the world of fishermen in this coastal resort. Kiwix Server The model named Aaltje appears several times in his work: a portrait dated 1902 was reproduced in the magazine *Onze Kunst* in 1905, whilst a pastel entitled *Fishers’ woman from Katwijk, Aaltje*, dated 1904, is also documented.
