Note:
Jakob SMITS, a Belgian-Dutch painter, draughtsman and engraver. Trained at the academies in Rotterdam, Brussels and Munich, he settled in Mol, in the Belgian Kempen, in 1888. A member of Kunst van Heden, he was closely associated with the Mol School. His work, characterised by pre-Expressionist Symbolism, is distinguished by its emphasis on light, the landscapes of the Campine region, and depictions of peasants and ordinary people.
