Léon DE SMET (Ghent 1881 – Deurle 1966)
Orchard at Sunset in the Lys Valley (probably near Sint-Martens-Latem), 1908 Oil on panel, monogrammed ‘LDS’ within a circle in the lower left-hand corner, approx. 26.5 x 37 cm.

This exhibition of private collections is included in the exhibition history of Frits Van den Berghe published by the Oscar De Vos gallery (Sint-Martens-Latem); its 1970 edition features in a provenance record published by De Vuyst.

Note:
A work from the Sint-Martens-Latem period (1906–1913), during which De Smet, a member of ‘Vie et Lumière’, painted the orchards and meadows of the Leiestreek in a luminist style derived from Emile Claus. An orchard viewed from above in low-angle light; blue-green shadows from the fruit trees cast towards the foreground, pink trunks, a curtain of poplars, and a yellow-green sky.
