Note:
After the First World War, Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès became a prolific travelling painter. His travels took him notably to the south of France, Italy, Africa, India, Madagascar and, later, to South-East Asia. Christie’s points out that his travels between 1919 and 1927 can be traced in particular through the dated paintings and gouaches he produced during his stays, and cites Venice as one of the cities where the artist was able to stay long enough to study its atmosphere and light. Christie’s
Venice is indeed a well-documented subject in his work. A view of the Grand Canal, dated and located ‘Canal Grande, Venice 1919’, is known, as is a ‘View of Santa Maria delle Salute and San Marco, seen from Le Zitelle, Venice’, bearing the inscription ‘Venice 1919 / J. Le Mayeur’. Christie’s Another composition, *Sailing boats near Venice*, is dated and located ‘Venice 1921’, attesting to the enduring presence of the Venetian theme in his work in the early 1920s. Christie’s
This work thus forms part of Le Mayeur’s European and travelling period, several years before he settled in Bali in 1932.
