Description
Paul MATHIEU (1872–1932) Paris, The Pont Neuf seen from the Quai du Louvre, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 54 x 81 cm. Description: A leading figure in Belgian Luminism and a founding member of the Le Sillon group, Paul Mathieu developed a style of landscape painting sensitive to variations in light and atmosphere. During his stay in France during the First World War, Paris and the quays of the Seine became a particular source of inspiration. In this view of the Pont Neuf, the artist captures the Parisian light with great freshness, employing a light and delicately pearlescent palette. The free and vibrant brushwork, particularly evident in the foliage and the reflections on the Seine, lends the composition a remarkable sense of spontaneity and luminosity.
